On Tuesday, January 28, the San Bernardino County Supervisors unanimously approved a two year extension of the wood shake roof covering ordinance. The motion was presented by Supervisor James Ramos and seconded by Gary Ovitt. The new deadline for compliance with the county's wood shake shingle roof replacement is July 1, 2016. This extension allows homeowners to complete applications for funds through the FEMA 2008 Legislative Pre-Disaster Mitigation Program grant to offset roof-replacement costs.
The amendment also exempts registered historic structures from the roof replacement requirement. The exception will help to honor the historic integrity of affected mountain communities.
The original ordinance, which became effective on January 1, 2009, was approved to help reduce the risk to life and property due to brush fires in areas in Fire Safety Zones in the mountain communities that are particularly prone to wildland and forest fires.
